I survived….. Just! Part 4, I’m Home well for a while.

As I’m writing this we have been home 7 weeks!  My recovery is going well but slower than I would like. I try to push myself and then end up feeling poorly so I need to learn to take it easier.

We arrived home Tuesday evening quite late. I needed to sleep and was in a little bit of pain. However, I also wanted to see the big twins.

Grandma brought them over and we all had cuddles then they went back to grandmas for the night!

The first few nights we slept downstairs – It just felt like too much stretching for me to get upstairs (besides I thought id be more comfy in the reclining chair I’d been used to the hospital bed that I could sit up!

While it was nice to be home I was anxious that we were now on our own! I wasn’t under constant monitoring to check for infection, or to make sure my wound was healing.

Though I did have visits from the midwife team, Who checked my wound, asked how I was.

For a week or more I was paranoid about my bowel movements worried that I wasn’t going enough or that It somehow twisted again!

The first week the furthest I walked was next door to my InLaws as she cooked almost every night!
Everywhere I walked I was still having to hold my belly.

By the end of the week, however, I had managed to do a school run & a trip to the coffee shop on the way home!

The week after however things took a turn for the worse!

Monday Morning I started with a pain in my back that slowly throughout the day radiated through to my chest and under my ribs!

It was that painful in the evening I ended up at A&E – they gave me some morphine and took some bloods. I was put in an observation bay to wait for the Dr, when he came he said that he thought it was just gastric distress and he sent me home!

Meanwhile, My mum had the 4 children.

The Next day came and after a week at home hubby had to go back into work (He had used up all of his paternity and more while we were in the hospital)  So I had my mum and Hubby’s mum on hand as I wasn’t healed enough to lift and carry. I woke with a similar pain to the night before though not quite as bad. Again by tea time, I was in agony.

I ended up ringing 111 who after I had described my pain decided to send an ambulance! After they had monitored me at home they decided to put me in an ambulance straight back to A&E.. Hubby came to me straight after work, I was still waiting to be seen at that point. Once I had been seen they took some more bloods and gave me some morphine again the bloods came back and it turns out my liver wasn’t functioning properly and was actually infected. I needed to be transferred to another hospital to see the surgical team as they don’t have a surgical department at our local hospital.  They would send for an ambulance and take me to another hospital. The one I was sent to when they found my placenta issue.

Hubby went home when I was told my ride was here. (3rd ambulance now and still no blue lights and siren)

It was midnight before I got to the new hospital,  I was given antibiotics, fluid and some painkillers had my observations taken and managed to get a little sleep!

The next day I was taken for an x-ray, as they suspected I had gallstones. They couldn’t see enough from that so was sent for an ultrasound which confirmed yup there were gallstones.

Now for some more blood to be taken to see if my liver was responding to the antibiotics.  I was told as there were gallstones in my gallbladder I was to have an MRCP which is done in an MRI scanner but they take the images of the chest area not like before when I went for my placenta.

The MRCP was to make sure none of the stones had migrated to any of the bile tubes as this could be what was causing the pain!

Unlike before they talked me through each section of the scanning process helping me to feel less anxious!

Hurray, they have not migrated. Though I am told that my best option is to have a routine operation to remove my gallbladder. But don’t worry its done under general anaesthetic, but it’s only a keyhole surgery  (Oh well that’s ok then it’s not like I’ve had two major operations in the past month or anything!)

A couple of days of antibiotics, and painkillers and I was allowed home!

I’m sent home with more antibiotics, and instructions to start eating low-fat, no grease, no spice diet! I was told I would get an appointment soon to discuss taking out my gallbladder.

Having spoke to others that have had gallstones they have recommended anything under 10g of fat in 100g, with a low saturated fat content.

I’m now feeling so much better, however, struggling to remember to take it easy – something I need to remember as I feel good one day and end up doing too much then end up feeling lousy.

I’ve now had my appointment through for early January.

Meanwhile, I have to stay on my low-fat diet!

Let’s hope when I’ve had my gallbladder removed that’s the end of my problems and I can live a fit & healthy life!

Thanks for all your support, good wishes, prayers & thoughts over the past couple of months.

Also thanks to Jessops and all the staff there! They were amazing!

Grateful Sunday!

This week I decided to start a daily gratitude list.

IMG_1633.jpg

I have done it before both on my own and as a family – We would send our list to each other (Myself Hubby & Stepson) via our family messenger group! It really helped especially when hubby worked away and with stepson only being here at weekends anyway!

Gratitude lists or journals can really benefit your mental health. They help you focus on the good things of the day, give you 5 – 10 minutes of calm, and when you’re having a bad day you can look back and see all the good things you have written in the past!

To keep me accountable for writing out my list I will post a few of the top things I’ve been grateful for each week!

My List for Sunday 29th October 2017

  • Being half term I have been able to spend some quality time with the big Twins
  • My New cord dress ( I think it may become my fave outfit!)
  • Great friends that live nearby
  • My Mum (AKA Nanny Sue) Giving me a break from the midnight feed so I could catch up on sleep. I think she may feature a lot in these lists!
  • My Hubby for being home when he can
  • Our garden – Hubby Pushed himself over the summer to create an amazing space for our family
  • Family cinema Night – We watched Polar Express, I made hot Chocolate, & We had popcorn

Pumpkin Picking – Maxeys Farm Shop

Earlier in the week, we took a trip to Maxeys Farm Shop in Kirklington Nottinghamshire to pick a couple of pumpkins to carve.

We arrived around lunchtime and the car park was already nearly full. The car park attendants showed us to an empty space luckily not too far from the entrance.

IMG_1076

We changed into our wellies and headed into the field. once in there seemed to be loads of pumpkins left to pick even though it had been open since the beginning of October.

Before we set off to pick our pumpkins we spied the Bouncy Castle Pumpkin and joined the short queue to go on!

After the bouncy castle, the kids saw the tractor ride so we headed to the top of the field to go on.

IMG_1118

The tractor took us around a top field where there were more pumpkins growing and a party tent.

After the two rides, we went back out to the car park to pick up a wheelbarrow to collect our pumpkins.

We all needed the toilet before we went back in, We could only find portaloos and only single ones. no disabled ones so we all had to squeeze into the single ones (I wasn’t going to leave 5-year-olds on their own outside)

Back to the field for pumpkin picking but first the kids wanted an ice cream. I tried a pumpkin one, the kids had a mint one and a clotted cream one. The ice-cream van had come from Thaymar.

IMG_1184

I have to say the pumpkin ice cream was really nice. something I would definitely try again!

Right now for what we came for. The kids spent ages scrutinising each pumpkin picking one up saying this is the one mummy, no wait let me look over there, then they would put one back and pick another until they were happy with the one they had!

We then pushed the barrow down the field to pay (Cash Only) There was a bit of a queue to pay for our pumpkins!

IMG_1192

After we had put our pumpkins in the car we went back in to check out the spooky woodland walk.

I didn’t get time to look in the shop. but next time maybe!

The kids loved their afternoon out

Maxeys Pumpkin Patch is open until 31st October but the farm shop is open year round.

The pumpkin patch is open from 9am – 5pm each day

I have not been compensated for this post all opinions are my own.

I survived….. Just! (Placenta Percreta Cesarean hysterectomy) Part 3

If you have come straight to this page you really should start with part one and part two of my story.

I ended last week by telling you they had found my bowel had twisted.

The anaesthetist that had been with me since we had arrived at Jessops was the one that came to tell me along with another consultant.

This meant I had to go back down to theatre and have it untwisted!

They said as my wound was split so significantly they would go in through that.

Now Hallamshire that’s attached to Jessops (where I had my section) didn’t have a surgeon at that time to do this second op, it looked like I was going to have to be transferred without my hubby or the babies to another hospital elsewhere in the city.

The anaesthetist meanwhile was due to finish her shift but told me she was going to do her upmost to get the surgeon from the other hospital to come over and do it at the Hallamshire. she was on the phone ages just outside my room. I could hear her telling whoever was on the end that she wanted the surgery done at the Hallamshire and that it must be done asap!

She came back to see me after a while and told me not only had she got the surgeon to come to us but she was cancelling her evening plans and was going to take me to theatre!

It was around 10.30 at night when I eventually got taken down and by midnight I was back in recovery but this time no tv Theme tunes! Hubby was there though to make sure I was ok. before I was taken up to the Intensive care ward again.

Here I was told I had to wear a pressurised oxygen mask as my lungs were a little squished. however, its nothing to worry about. they said I could either have a face mask that is quite tight and can cause some people to feel restricted and uncomfy or a helmet type thing made of plastic that you put your head in and the oxygen is pumped in. I chose the helmet Called a C-pap helmet.

It was actually better than the first night I spent on Intensive care as the helmet was really noisy with the sound of the oxygen coming through it. This meant I couldn’t hear the beeps from the monitors and I actually got a better few hours sleep!

After around 4 hours they said I could take off the helmet!

The next morning I must have felt better as I chatted and chatted to the nurse about my thoughts and feelings from the past few weeks. I think I really needed to process things.

I was still nil by mouth but my mouth was so dry and tasted awful so the health workers brought me a wash kit, toothbrush water and toothpaste. I’m not sure if it was because of my mouth being so dry or what but brushing my teeth felt amazing!

Hubby came to see me after a while, he said I looked so much better.

IMG_3082.JPG

I now had to get up out of bed again and like after the c section. my muscles having been cut for the second time!

Later on, I was transferred back to the high dependency unit.

I was still nil by mouth and I still had the tube in my nose.

I was told once that had nothing else coming up it I could start on some fluids!

It wasn’t long before I was asking for a cup of tea. Next, I was told I could start eating soft food!

A couple of days later Saturday 9th – I was up and out of bed still very sore and tired and full of trapped wind! – Still no bowel movements. But I felt well enough for my big twins to come and visit! They had not yet met their baby brother and sister nor had they seen me for 2 weeks.

It was amazing to see them and see them meet their new siblings. They spent time cuddling them and staring at them!

Sunday came I was transferred back up to the postnatal ward! I spent the night on the ward but the next morning was told that as I had a long way to go before I could be discharged I had to be moved again to the ward opposite as the one I was on was for quick turnaround patients.

I was told that they had a room for me – so I got up out of bed had a wash got dressed and walked the length of two wards the furthest id probably walked since I got to Jessops in the first place! along the corridor, I was met by my lovely anaesthetist who said she had come to see how I was doing, however, she could see I was a lot better as I was waking!

I arrived at my new room- Hubby was given a camp bed so that he could continue to stay and support me and help with the twins.

I sat on the bed in my new room looking at the squirrels running about the trees outside when a wave of emotion of the past few weeks hit me!

I sobbed like Id not sobbed for ages! The nurse came in to do my observations and said there would be no point doing them right now as they would be bound to be high. she went and got me a cuppa and said she would come back in a while!

Sunday afternoon I had a surprise visit from some friends of ours – It really cheered me up they even stayed with the twins while me and Hubby went and got a cuppa in the patient kitchen. It was the first time we had been just us since before the csection!

We went out on the balcony – Although it was cold it was nice to just get some air and see the sky! Even just be us for a moment!

Later that night I felt the urge to go to the toilet! – I did it! A bowel movement finally!

I told Hubby who went straight out to tell the nurses! If I’ve learnt one thing during my hospital stay its that the nurses are obsessed with bowel & bladder habits!

The Next day, another bowel movement! –  That’s when I decided enough was enough! I wanted to go home. I wanted to see my big twins. I wanted to get in my own bed, watch my own TV, be within my own 4 walls!

My daily visit from my anaesthetist came, I told her I wanted to go home and she went off and the next thing I know I’m getting visited by lots of different people to do any last minute checks that neede to be done before discharge!

First up was the mental health team, then a physio, then a lady who did the twins hearing tests – She had to do a complex test on them as they had spent some time in SCBU.

IMG_3184.jpg

Later that day around 5pm I was given a large bag containing all the medication I needed to take at home and I was told we could leave!

IMG_3190.JPG

And we’re home.

Find out how we got on with the first few days at home next week!
