Nina A Spencer – Motherhood Mentor – Simplifying the every day for busy overwhelmed mums -Mum Of Twins Twice! Placenta Accreta Survivor, Mental Health Champion, On my own simple living Journey filled with adventure and travel . Embracing The Imperfectly, Chaotic moments of motherhood.
Today we woke to rain pounding down on the roof of the motorhome. It wasn’t even one of those “its sound worse than it is” rains either it was full on soaked through just on the toilet block run! Needless to say we cancelled our Eden trip.
Today Chris had another work call to do this time in the middle of the day which is less than handy really especially given the state of the weather.
So I decided that while he sat in the motorhome on his call we would go in search of a cream tea & some hot chocolate.
Fern Pit Cafe
We found a car park on top of the cliffs that had a great view. It would have been a great car park to park for a little adventure had A, The weather been better and B, Chris not been working. However we headed to a little cafe “Fern Pit Cafe”.
This place is tiny and down some steps but I managed to get the pushchair down there and found a table. I had my first cream tea of our trip and the kids shared some chips.
The cream tea was ok nothing out of the ordinary but delicious nonetheless. Afterwards it had stopped raining so we took a little walk down a few steps. The steps actually lead down to the bay and a ferry across to Crantock. We only went down a few steps but it looked as if there was a lot more to get down before getting to the bottom.
Widemouth Bay
Back to the “bus” and Chris had finished his call so we bundled in and headed to our favourite beach widemouth. Its over an hours drive from where we are but it’s our last night in Cornwall and we wanted to make it a good one.
For a while the kids were asleep and we just sat watching the surfers and boogie boarders ride the waves. Then once the kids woke and the waves calmed a little we went for a splash around ourselves. before getting dry and having a bit of a BBQ right on the beach.
The perfect way to end our little Cornwall adventure.
On to our last couple of days in the motorhome and time to head back up north.
Today was another trip to one of my must see places The Lost Gardens Of Heligan. The stunning gardens named due to them being lost after the war to a sea of brambles and ivy. Which were then discovered and restored in the 90’s and brought back to life to create this award winning public gardens.
We got up after quite a rough night due to the little people who keep waking in the night. the thing about being in a motorhome is the walls a very thin so when someone is screaming DO, DO at 2am it’s going to be heard through other neighbouring walls like the other campers and tents. It’s happened every night so far and makes me quite anxious to get to them quick and quiet them down.
Anyway i digress we got up and made our way to Heligan having breakfast when we parked up again so we knew that we could park. We were still quite late and arrived around 9.30 it opens at 10. Luckily we seemed more organised than other motorhomers (is that even a word?) and was first in the camper bays.
After our bacon butties we headed in now I think we should have taken the pushchair and and left it at the space that were more difficult to navigate as the amount the little two needed to be carried I am now sporting sore arm muscles. They have done really well again though to keep up as much as they have.
We only managed to get around a 3rd may be even only a quarter of the gardens but I knew I wanted to show the big twins the instafamous rope bridge and take them through the adventure walk where they could climb and jump around in the forest.
Once the jungle area had been explored we climbed back up the hill and to the playpark. where they found some more energy to climb the massive play fort and slide down the slide.
Just as we were preparing to leave and head to find a cream tea (I’ve not managed to find one yet I think there is a scone shortage) I felt a tap on my shoulder.
A lady who I have “followed” online since back when I found I was pregnant with twins the first time around was there for the day with her own twins. She has helped me quite a bit with some stories she shared of her own two. Her twins are an exact year older than mine.
It was so lovely to finally meet in person she seems so lovely and her twins are a credit to her and her husband.
If only I could find somewhere for a cream tea (and had more time here) we could have a proper natter.
Back in the bus as we have called it and on to find a little harbour. We got to Mevagissey but unfortunately there was no where to park so ended up at a beach side car park in Par.
By this time I was getting tired and the place just felt a little odd. It could have been such a beautiful beach area but the stream that led to the beach looked and smelled stagnant there was even a dead bird floating in it. It seemed like the water just wasn’t flowing enough. Once we got to the beach the shore line was littered with jellyfish. So instead we headed up to the pub to get my long awaited for cream tea.
Nope No scones left! Jeeze Can I not catch a break? Instead I ordered the kids some nuggets. I headed outside to the play area where unfortunately Chris had a work call he had to be on. As dinner arrived the smell from the dogs who had been to the toilet really put me off. For the first time I feel like I dont really like this place.
It’s time to head back, As soon as we headed west again I could feel my mood changing almost like certain areas had a better atmosphere. Another detour this time to watergate bay for me and Chris to get some dinner. The car park is full of campers and cars with surfboards strapped to them and handfuls of people in wetsuits.
Watergate Bay is a tiny little bay with a few restaurants and bars. most of which require booking as we found out. One place though had space. it was now heading to 9pm but we still managed some loaded nachos and the kids managed some ice cream. The afternoon saved by Nachos.
We got back to our site quite late but a least before the 11pm driving curfew.
Today was meant to be a rest day just hanging around the campsite. However the lack of supplies like food and nappies put change to that.
The little twins gave me an early start to my bank holiday Monday about 6.30am in fact. So I set to and wrote yesterday’s diary entry with my first cuppa of the day.
When the pool opened I headed down for a quick morning swim and a sneaky latte while the laundry washed.
We thought that one of us could head into Newquay on the bus to get our supplies. Unfortunately the bus never arrived we can only assume its due to the bank holiday.
So a quick pack up of the van and we are heading to Newquay to do a shop.
A little shop later and the cupboard is bursting! Well for a little while anyway with this hungry lot.
Then we decide to explore somewhere. We drive through some lovely looking beach towns but the parking looks a little too full to squeeze the motorhome in.
We end up at a National Trust car park in search of Bedruthan Steps. Instead we end up at a pretty little slate beach after having walked through a field and nature reserve.
The beach itself is full of rock pools and plenty of rocks to climb. There was a group of people all set up for the day with a BBQ, blankets and camp chairs all around. If only we were that organised.
The kids thought it was brilliant being able to splash in the stream and climb the rocks. Even the little two weren’t phased by the climbing.
Heading back to the car alternating between having to carry the little twins or chasing after them as they’ve ran too far in front we find that we now have to navigate back through the field. The field is now occupied by a herd of cows. It didn’t put anyone off though. In fact I think Mason would have gone to stroke them given half a chance.
Back home and it’s almost 6. Just enough time for the kids to have a little swim in the pool. I call pool duty! The little twins have been a little challenging so I opt for the easy job.
Now just time for pizza and a quick tidy around. You wouldn’t believe such a small space could get so messy so quick.
The kids, Chris and our next door neighbour boy then finish the day with another movie night.
Last Morning at Sennen Cove. When we arrived the manager said our stay would go quickly and he wasn’t wrong. But on to a site now with lots of things for the kids to do.
Waking up to the smell of bacon drifting over camp sure is a great way to start the day but only if you have your own bacon buttie to look forward to.
Today however we don’t so we pack the van up quickly and head to McDonalds.
We park up near to where we were last night overlooking the beach and St Michael’s Mount.
In the sea there are paddle boarders, people canoeing and the odd one or two having a swim. My mission after breakfast is to sneak in my first sea swim of our holidays.
Time For A Swim
The big two end up coming with me. They are fairly competent swimmers now so at least if won’t distract my swim too much.
a swim swin can be very bracing but once your in you dont really notice the temperature. Once we got out I could feel that endorphin high sweeping . and a smile appearing.
Then the we took the little twins to have a splash. Mason really love the beach and his curls make us think he’s going to be a surfer dude when he’s older. Maybe we need to move to the coast?
Campsite number 5 though I’m not sure you can really call this one a camp!
Treloy Touring Park
This site is amazing, along with the usual shower blocks shop and things there is also a pool, games room, massive play park, dedicated playing field, a cafe and a small entertainment bar. It’s more like a holiday park really.
I wanted to give the kids a bit of a treat with this site. We have already made friends with the family across as they have a lovely old english sheepdog who is just one and is ready for a lot of fuss which is handy as Jessica is such a dog fan. I blame that Waffle Doggy!
So post nap time was swimming in the surprisingly warm pool followed by dinner in the cafe and obviously testing out the play park.
When we got back to the Motorhome it was getting towards dusk so Chris set up the cinema for the kids and I set up marshmallow toasting.
We were joined halfway through the film by the dog from across and his human boy. The dog however wouldn’t sit for the film so went back to his tent but the boy stayed until the end.
I Hope these simple memories will be the ones the kids remember when they grow up.
Today’s adventure involved a trip on a bus. The community bus stops right outside the Campsite.
You can’t come to Cornwall without visiting lands end can you? We decided that we would head to the famous landmark on public transport today.
The community bus was fab. Just a little 16 seater minibus ran by volunteers. The driver was very friendly and helped us aboard with or million children.
Lands End
There are lots of things to do once at the landmark. Most things are extra to the car park fee, though we didnt pay as we came on the bus. I had seen on the website an Aardman Animations exhibition which I did want to go and have a look at. I was surprised by how good the exhibit was. We also paid for a photo underneath the famous sign. Well you’ve got to haven’t you?
Then before catching the bus home we had a bite to eat. They were huge portions but as you would expect for a tourist attraction the prices we quite steep.
Back on the bus and to the motorhome for a bit of an afternoon nap.
After naptime its time to head back out again for a trusty old mcdonalds and a trip to St Michaels Mount. We got there at just the right time for the tide coming in so we got to see the slipway disappear under the tide. Afterwards a trip to the play park to burn off energy before bedtime.
St Michaels Mount and the island is actually closed on a saturday but you can still head across the causeway or climb the rock on the beach for a view of the causeway from above.
We drove all the way back to the campsite and then remembered we had no milk. Unfortunately the only shop was back in the town where we had just been so we had to turn around and go back. I can’t live without my morning cuppa.
